Meeting February 18, 2016
Tom Swan led us in the Flag Salute.

Midge Stork announced that the raffle prize today was a gift card to Bed Bath & Beyond generously donated by Bill Spellman.

Bill Gray brought two guests with him today, Steve Harbison & John Ellis. Visiting us from Ventura-Downtown was Norm Blanchard.

Joe Strohman conducted elections to the RCVE Foundation Board. The nominees were Bill Crookston, Jordan Eller & Vance Thompson. Club members were instructed to vote for two of the nominees.

The Foundation conducted their annual meeting last week and Ron Polito reported that the Morgan Stanley funds will not be available for scholarships this year. $25,000 will be used from the Schwab account for scholarships and some ideas were discussed about doing some internal fund raising to get additional scholarship funds.

Kathy McGee gave our Inspirational Message followed by Rafael Canton who gave our joke of the week.

Tom Swan passed around a sign up sheet for a Clean-up day at the City Center on March 19th from 8:00 - 3:00.

President's Announcements:
  • Michelle Cekov is leaving for Nicaragua for the next 2 weeks to follow up with the GoCare projects.

  • The Board has accepted the nomination of Harriet Clune to be PEN.

Rich Stewart and PEN Harriet Clune totaled up the votes for the RCVE Foundation Board election and Joe Strohman reported that Bill Crookston and Vance Thompson were both elected to 3 year terms beginning July 1, 2016. Congratulations to Bill and Vance.

Natalie Debbas reported that Interact is doing well. They are a small group, but MIGHTY! The big project continues to be working with the special ed kids twice a month.

President Bruce asked Natalie if it would be possible to have some of the Interact members participate in the St Patrick's Day Parade on March 12th.

Student of the Quarters were presented today:

John Tappin from the Industrial Arts Department. John's sponsor was Laura Shannon who was unable to attend today's meeting so standing in for Laura was President Bruce.

Colby Silva from the Business Department. Colby's sponsor was Husam Hishmeh.

Tim Blackwell spoke about membership. Tim has been sending out emails to remind us to invite! It must be working because Bill Gray had 2 guests with him today!!!

Midge Stork conducted the raffle and the lucky winner was Pete Gallagher!
My memories of our club's growth
I remember a period -in the late seventies- when the membership of our Club was growing. I believe we were up to 80 members. During our meetings, the sliding wall that separates the Ventura Room from the Santa Paula Room was kept open in the middle. The buffet was served in the Ventura Room, so that we could meet in the Santa Paula Room. That worked out very well.

However, our members knew additional persons in the community who had expressed an interest in joining our Club. Several of us weighed the advantages and disadvantages of becoming larger. We agreed that if we became too large, the closeness of our inter-personal relations would suffer. We felt it would be better to create an additional Rotary Club. That would provide opportunity for more persons to enjoy the intimacy that we enjoyed, and to participate in the "Rotary Club Leadership" experience. However, at that time, we would not be allowed, by Rotary International, to create another club without the authorization of our "mother club" - The Ventura Rotary Club. Also, the new club would have to limit its membership to the east of the line of demarcation between the Ventura Club and the Rotary Club of Ventura-East.

Therefore, in 1978-79, when I was president of our Club, I and several other members of our Club's Board met with the Board of the Ventura Club. During our meeting, I said that it's harder to remember the names of members, the larger the club is. A member of the Ventura Club Board said: "I used to be a member of a Rotary Club, in Los Angeles, that had over 400 members. I remembered the name of every one of them." They denied our request. They told us we should grow bigger.

Subsequently, Rotary International changed the rules. After that, we created the Rotary Club of Ventura-South (4/29/83) and the Rotary Club of Ventura-Marina (3/29/85). For many years, our Club continued to have 75 - 80 members.
How will we double the size of Ventura-East???
46 = the number of active members
22 = the number of meetings left in Bruce's term
2 = If everyone invited just two guests/week
2,024 = the number of people who would be invited for the remainder of this Rotary Year.
506 = the number of visitors if 25% show up
50 = the number of new members is 10% join us.

Get busy and start inviting!
News from Rotary International

Rotary members, their families and friends can support Rotary’s work by bidding on antiques, artwork, jewelry, and collectibles through eBay Live Auctions events. Each month, Rotary will promote on its social media outlets a set of upcoming Live Auctions events, and eBay, the world’s largest auction website, will donate a portion of all sale proceeds from those events to Rotary. Live Auctions events enable buyers to participate in auctions across the United States -- held at such auction houses as Sotheby’s, Swann, and Freeman’s -- without leaving home. Under this proceeds-sharing...

Are you seeking inspiration for ways to mark Rotary’s 111th anniversary on 23 February? Here are some thought-starter ideas: Host a celebration party at your next club meeting. Inform your social media followers on 23 February that it’s Rotary’s anniversary by changing your Facebook cover photo to a birthday cake.  Encourage club members to bring a friend to your next meeting or to hear your next guest speaker. Plan a project and invite community members to volunteer their help. Sponsor a local event and use the opportunity to tell people about Rotary and about the work your club is doing in...

A new email purporting to be from Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith is targeting Rotary members. The email falsely claims that members can become End Polio Now ambassadors if they email club information to a Gmail address within 48 hours. The fraudulent email has the subject line “BECOME AN END POLIO AMBASSADOR” and is sent from a fake email address. This is a scam. Rotary staff is working to resolve the issue. Avoid being the victim of scams by deleting any email that appears suspicious.
