  • Promote literacy and career guidance in schools

Internationally we support a huge project our club started called GoCare in Nicaragua and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

Greetings

As the summer is coming to an end our busy time of the year is just about to start, from Buena Interact to Nightmare on The Hills to many many fun projects.  Our avenues of service are back to meetings once a month, attending these meeting will bring you sense of what Rotary is all about.  This week we have our International Service meeting Wednesday 5:30PM at GoCare office led by Michelle Chekov.

This week's meeting is our own pride and joy Dr Bill Spellman DDS.  A retired successful dentist turned to stage actor,  will tell us how theater works, from script to opening the curtain. I personally can't wait to hear Bill sing to us, he is an amazing talent,

Nope...it's remember the WaytoGO!

Ventura East Rotary is celebrating "Rotary in Ventura County" with a "funtastic" Star Princess 4-day cruise featuring all day visits to Catalina island's hideaway, Avalon and Mexico's charming Ensenada.  The best part is it will be with your favorite friends and Rotary Club members.

Organized by 53 year Ventura Club member, John Masterson (aka Capt'n Cruise),  this will have the fun, food and fraternization (remember the Love Boat?) of a normal Princess Cruise with the added Rotary elements such as cocktail parties, unique scavenger hunt and an uproarious joint, all club meeting, held by our 2016-2017 leader and world traveler, Husam Hismeh.  Even transportation to San Pedro is included.

Meeting August 18, 2016
Dick Gallagher led us in the Flag Salute.

Rich Stewart introduced guests and visiting Rotarians.

Visiting from Ventura Downtown was Past President Mario De La Piedra.

Guest of Amber Stevens was her mom, Lark Stevens and guests of President Husam were Sharon Daley and Tobias Hildebrand.

President Husam gave our Inspirational Message.

Greg Frye then delivered our Joke of the Day.

Todd Juvonen told us about the Community Service meeting. Community Service will be meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Todd wants Community Service to be driven by our members and thanked Tim Hughes and Jeff Hata for the opportunities they have brought to the club. Todd's commitment is to work with the other clubs to see where we can all work together.

The Fundraising committee had a meeting on Tuesday and there were a lot of great ideas presented. It looks like our next "BIG" fundraiser could be an Art Auction. Kris Hansen has done this type of event in the past and it was great for the community. The events were typically a Black Tie event and raised in the area of $17,000 - $20,000. Kris would like ideas and suggestions for charities to partner with. Kris would like to see this event held sometime in the spring.

President Husam read a thank you card from Mary Cassey O'Niel thanking us for our donation to the Blanche Reynolds Library.

Happy $'s: Bill Gray, Greg Frye, John Masterson and Tim Hughes.

John Masterson announced that March 9th would be the departure date for a 4 day cruise to Mexico called the "Rotary Splash Bash!!!" Information will be coming so keep an eye on our club website and future editions of the Breeze. President Husam's vision would be to see the boat filled with Rotarians!!!

Alison talked about her 33 mile hike over 3 days last week.

Jeff Hata spoke about Nightmare on the Hill. At this time, we need to be gathering sponsorships. Jeff Hata also said Poinsettia sales are beginning and to see Sara Masterson for order forms.
Ahoy Rotarians (and all other jolly good fellows & fellowettes)
We have been kicking around for many months now the idea of a Ventura Rotary East cruise.

To get our best price, we should have at least 20 people (10 couples?)

Right now, Carnival and Princess are the two lines that are offering 3 and 4 day cruises out of San Pedro/Long Beach

Do you have any interest?

Presently we have seen prices as low as $65 per person, per day.  When you figure it out, that is $130 per couple which includes travel, food, entertainment and tons of fun.  Obviously that is
an inside cabin. ( not that bad, actually went 13 days thru the Panama Canal in one) or scale yourself on up the price ladder to the Owners Suite!

I am looking for some time in January or February.  Stops would include Catalina and Ensenada (4-day) or Ensenada (3-Day)

I am sure Bob and Wendy would hold their annual “in room” cocktail party, and there will be karaoke for those wanta be Frank Sinatra’s  (He’s dead isnt he?)

Plus other surprises I can wrangle out of the travel agency  and cruise line.

What I need from you is a measure of interest.  Say something to me personally if interested.  No commitment  yet, just a measurement of interest.

YOURS TRULY,

CAPT’N CRUISE  (AKA John Masterson)
News from Rotary International
Rotary clubs of District 6200 are collecting relief funds to help thousands of victims after record flooding devastated communities in southern Louisiana, USA, earlier this month. Torrential rains caused rivers, streams, and bayous to swell, damaging or destroying more than 60,000 homes and killing at least 13 people. The U.S. Coast Guard and emergency responders helped rescue more than 30,000 residents from the rising flood waters. As of 25 August, more than 3,000 residents were still in emergency shelters even after the water receded. Donate to District 6200 disaster relief fund.

Legendary singer and polio survivor Donovan Leitch, better known simply as Donovan, has joined Rotary in its fight to eradicate the paralyzing disease that afflicted him during much of his childhood. Donovan contracted polio at age three in Glasgow, Scotland. The disease weakened his right leg and left it thinner and shorter than the other. Confined to his bed for much of his childhood, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer said his father would read him poetry. In a recent interview with the Daily Express, Donovan said that listening to poetry piqued his interest in creative writing. “If I...

Rotary's fourth World Polio Day celebration, on 24 October, will highlight extraordinary progress in the eradication campaign and emphasize the work that remains before we wipe out the virus for good. With the number of new cases worldwide nearly halved from this time last year, we have the opportunity to rally our resources and see the last case of polio this year. Health officials and Rotary's celebrity polio ambassadors will head to Atlanta, Georgia, USA, for the event, the first to be held at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It will be streamed live and then will...

The way Rotary member Todd Jenkins puts it, he's the first generation in his family "to do everything": first to go to college, first to fly on a plane, first to visit another country, and the first to live across state lines. Jenkins, 28, grew up in a low-income neighborhood in Columbia, South Carolina, USA. His family worked hard just to make ends meet. So travel and college seemed out of reach. The eldest of ten children, Jenkins says his goal was to break out of the family status quo and set a positive example for his siblings. He credits his mother with helping him avoid falling into the...

The World Health Organization has confirmed two cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Nigeria, the first cases in the country since July 2014. After passing a year without a case of the wild poliovirus, Nigeria was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries in September 2015. These cases – from two local government areas of Borno state – occurred in July 2016. The Government of Nigeria – in partnership with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative – will take immediate steps to respond quickly to the outbreak to prevent further spread of the disease. This response will include...
